History

The school opened in 1959. The school's original name is Roy W. Martin Jr. High.[2] In July 2005, a fire destroyed the school's gym and damaged much of the rest of the building. It was the costliest arson in Las Vegas since 1981 when the Las Vegas Hilton burned. It now has a new campus next to the old Roy W. Martin, and now has two floors.[4]

The school district had been planning a $4 million renovation of the school but in assessing the cost of repairing after the fire decided to build an entirely new building. The $50 million new building, the first two-floor middle school in Clark County, opened for the 2008-09 school year.[1]

Academics

Roy Martin Middle School was named a Magnet School of Excellence by the Magnet Schools of America in 2008 and 2009.[5] The magnet program offers a curriculum concordant with that of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. The MYP program is continued at Valley High School (Nevada).
